16 Inch vs 18 Inch Chainsaw Chain: Why Length Is Not the Whole Size

A 16 inch and 18 inch chain may differ by more than length. Compare pitch, gauge, drive links, and saw power before changing sizes.

16 Inch vs 18 Inch Chainsaw Chain: Why Length Is Not the Whole Size

The search sounds simple: “16 inch chainsaw chain” or “18 inch chainsaw chain.” In practice, length is only the label on the shelf. The chain still has to match pitch, gauge, drive links, bar mount, sprocket, and saw power.

An 18 inch bar gives more reach, but it also adds chain length and friction. A small saw that cuts well with a 16 inch bar may feel slow with an 18 inch setup.

Can you put an 18 inch chain on a 16 inch bar?

No. A chain loop made for an 18 inch bar will usually have too many drive links for a 16 inch bar. It will not tension correctly.

The opposite is also true: a 16 inch loop will usually be too short for an 18 inch bar.

Can you upgrade from a 16 inch bar to an 18 inch bar?

Sometimes, but only if the saw manufacturer supports that bar size and the replacement bar has the right mount. You also need to match:

  • Sprocket pitch
  • Bar gauge
  • Chain drive-link count
  • Oiler capacity
  • Saw power

If the saw bogs down, overheats, or oils poorly, the longer setup is not an upgrade.

Drive-link count is the part of chain sizing that buyers miss most often. A 16 inch low-profile chain might be 55DL, 56DL, or another count depending on the bar. An 18 inch chain might be 62DL, 68DL, 72DL, or another count.

That is why the complete spec matters more than the length label.

Practical buying advice

If you are replacing only the chain, match the existing bar stamp. If you are replacing both the bar and chain, buy a matched combo for your exact saw mount. If you are changing bar length, confirm the saw’s approved range first.

Start from guide bars, saw chains, or bar and chain combos depending on what you are replacing.

FAQ

Will a longer bar cut faster?

Not usually. A longer bar can cut wider wood, but it creates more drag. Cutting speed depends on chain sharpness, chain type, saw power, and wood condition.

Is an 18 inch chain more dangerous?

The danger is not the length alone. The risk rises when the saw is underpowered, poorly tensioned, dull, or mismatched to the bar and chain.

Should homeowners choose 16 inch or 18 inch?

For general yard cleanup, 16 inch is easier to handle. For larger storm limbs and firewood, 18 inch can make sense if the saw is rated for it.
