DeWalt 60V MAX Chainsaw Chain & Bar Replacement — DCCS677 vs New 12-Inch Model

DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT 60V MAX chainsaw lineup now includes two very different saws aimed at different jobs. The DCCS677Z1 is a 20-inch, 4 HP beast designed for serious felling and bucking. The newer 60V MAX 12-inch brushless chainsaw (3.42 HP) is built for lighter-duty work — limbing, storm cleanup, and general property maintenance. Both run on the same FLEXVOLT 60V batteries, but their chain and bar specs are not the same.

Here is what you need to know before ordering replacement parts for either model.

DCCS677Z1 — The 20-inch model

The DCCS677 is DeWalt’s flagship battery chainsaw. At 4 HP, it competes directly with mid-range gas saws. The chain and bar specs:

  • Bar length: 20 inches
  • Chain pitch: 3/8” (full 3/8”, not 3/8” LP)
  • Chain gauge: 0.050”
  • Drive link count: 72 (for the 20” bar)
  • Chain type: Low-kickback, semi-chisel

This is a full-size chain setup. The 3/8” full pitch with 0.050” gauge is common across professional gas chainsaws, which means aftermarket chain options are abundant. Oregon, Carlton, and other manufacturers all make chains in this spec.

When replacing the bar, look for a 20-inch bar with a 3/8” pitch sprocket nose and 0.050” gauge rail. The bar mount pattern is specific to DeWalt — most aftermarket listings will specify “DeWalt 60V” or “DCCS677” compatibility.

60V MAX 12-inch brushless chainsaw

The newer 12-inch model is designed for portability and lighter cutting tasks. Its chain and bar specs differ significantly from the 20-inch model:

  • Bar length: 12 inches
  • Chain pitch: 3/8” LP (low profile)
  • Chain gauge: 0.050”
  • Drive link count: 45 (for the 12” bar)
  • Chain type: Low-kickback, semi-chisel
  • Motor: 3.42 HP brushless

The critical difference is the pitch: the 12-inch model uses 3/8” LP (low profile) chain, while the 20-inch uses full 3/8” chain. These are not interchangeable. LP chain has smaller cutters and drive links than standard 3/8” chain. Installing the wrong pitch will not fit the sprocket and could be dangerous.

Can you swap chains between the two models?

No. Despite both being DeWalt 60V MAX chainsaws, the chains are not cross-compatible:

  • Different pitch — 3/8” full vs 3/8” LP
  • Different bar length — 20” vs 12”
  • Different drive link count — 72 vs 45

The bars are also not interchangeable. Each model has a different bar mount design sized for its intended bar length and chain spec. Treat these as two completely separate saws when ordering replacement parts.

FLEXVOLT battery cross-compatibility

The good news on the battery side is straightforward. Both chainsaws use DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT 60V MAX battery system. Any FLEXVOLT battery works in either saw:

  • DCB606 (6.0Ah) — Standard FLEXVOLT pack, good balance of runtime and weight
  • DCB609 (9.0Ah) — Extended runtime for longer cutting sessions
  • DCB612 (12.0Ah) — Maximum runtime, but adds significant weight

FLEXVOLT batteries also work in DeWalt’s 20V MAX tools (they automatically switch to 20V), so your battery investment serves double duty. The FLEXVOLT system powers over 300 tools in the combined 20V/60V DeWalt lineup.

Ordering the right replacement chain

To avoid mistakes, always match these three specifications to your model:

  1. Pitch — 3/8” full (DCCS677) or 3/8” LP (12-inch model)
  2. Gauge — 0.050” (same for both)
  3. Drive links — 72 (20” bar) or 45 (12” bar)

When in doubt, count the drive links on your current chain. That number, combined with pitch and gauge, gives you an exact match every time.

What this means for replacement parts

If you own both DeWalt 60V chainsaws, you need to keep two separate chain inventories — they share nothing except the battery. Check our catalog for replacement chains and bars listed by DeWalt model number to ensure you get the correct fitment for the DCCS677 or the 12-inch brushless model.
